Charity to select subtype

When a charity is registered with the ACNC it is also registered as a ‘subtype’ (or subtypes, if more than one) of charity, which reflects its purpose or purposes. An example of a subtype is 'advancing education'.

On 1 January 2014 the Charities Act 2013 (Cth) (Charities Act) came into effect. The Charities Act has created some new subtypes and removed some old ones.

You may need to change your charity subtype if your charity was registered prior to 31 December 2013 and your old subtype no longer exists. You will need to transition to a new subtype, by choosing a new subtype that most closely matches your charity's charitable purpose.

If the message, ‘Charity to select subtype’ appears on your charity’s entry page on the ACNC Register you will need to select a new subtype. Choose carefully, and refer to your charity's governing documents. You may need to prove that this subtype is appropriate.

The transitional period to update your charity subtype ended on 30 June 2015.

You can update your charity subtype through the Charity Portal.
