Summary of activities
All activities and work that Health Consumers Queensland does day-to-day and achieves every year helps to promote the prevention or control of chronic diseases and relates directly to the Health Promotion Action Areas of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (World Health Organisation 1986) and the Jakarta Declaration for Health Promotion (World Health Organisation 1997). Health Consumers Queensland works with health service providers and health consumers to ensure our health systems effectively involve health consumers with chronic disease and their families in the planning, design monitoring and evaluation of services. This approach, known as 'consumer engagement' or 'partnering' or 'patient-centred care, leads to better health outcomes including the prevention, early detection and treatment of chronic disease. Health agencies, departments and governments across Australia recognise the value of consumer engagement in controlling and preventing chronic disease by endorsing it and making it central to foundational health policies. Most notably, it forms the Second Standard of the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care and consumer engagement underpins all other work hospitals must demonstrate to become accredited. The Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care also published Patient-Centred care: Improving quality and safety through partnerships with patients and consumers.
