Description of charity’s activities and outcomes:
The Young Womens Project worked with young women and girls affected by commercial sexual exploitation. In addition to individual support and group work, organisational partnerships were formed to address risk factors leading to exploitation. A Mentor Coordinator matched individuals with screened and trained mentors. The Drop-In Centre in St Kilda was the first point of engagement for those working on the streets. It provided a non-stigmatising environment and assisted individuals by starting with genuine engagement, building trust, providing crisis care and the opportunity to form positive and meaningful relationships. Individuals were assisted to navigate the services and systems essential to breaking out of the traps that keep them involved in street sex work, such as homelessness and drug addiction. Staff provided advocacy and support, and introduced individuals to key service providers. Social Inclusion activities provided fun, social and safe recreational experiences. Participants explored interests and strengths through activities such as movies, cooking, picnics etc. The Greeves St. Social Enterprise offered women involved in street sex work the opportunity to engage in creative and productive activities. Participants, overseen by skilled volunteers, created boutique products sold to the boutique trade, on-line and at other public engagements. The project allowed for increased job readiness, improved pro-social interpersonal relating skills and increased self-esteem.
