Description of charity's activities and outcomes
Research was undertaken or commissioned during the year on the extent of water and air pollution by coal mining companies in NSW and QLD and the extent of fugitive emissions from gasfields in QLD. Reports were written and surveys undertaken about the extent of damage from abandoned mines and ways to improve environmental outcomes from mine rehabilitation. We also assisted in research regarding the environmental and heritage qualities of agricultural and National Park regions in NSW. We looked into the impacts of proposed water reforms on the Great Artesian Basin in Queensland and the groundwater impacts of proposed mines or gasfield operations. A number of submissions were made to Government processes and inquiries across Australia, seeking to provide research and make recommendations for the preservation of the viability and productive capacity of Australian farms, natural tourism areas, cultural heritage sites and the conservation of fauna and flora. We also encouraged local citizens to engage in making submissions into public Government processes. Freedom of Information requests were lodged on matters such as the granting of water licences, the approval of mining leases and the sale of mining operations. This was in order to obtain information on matters to better inform the public and to enable improved advocacy on improvements in environmental regulation. Information was disseminated widely via the media and social media about the impacts of mining on farmland and environmentally sensitive areas, in keeping with our purpose to protect and enhance such areas and to prevent their degradation and to engage in and promote conservation of native Australian species of flora and fauna. A number of public events were held to inform the public about the impacts of uncontrolled mining development and to advocate for members of the public whose properties, natural areas or health are adversely affected by the activities of the mining industry in rural, regional and urban areas.
