Description of charity's activities and outcomes
Connecting Country had another successful year achieving positive results for landscape restoration in the Mount Alexander region of Central Victoria. Connecting Country worked collaboratively with over 31 Landcare and Friends groups, adjoining Landcare networks, local landholders, volunteers, all levels of government, philanthropists, the Dja Dja Wurrung, Trust for Nature, Parks Victoria, conservation groups, scientists, birdwatchers, school students and a mothers' group. These partnerships have facilitated extensive on-ground restoration work, numerous education and community engagement events, biodiversity monitoring, and direct support for local Landcare efforts.During 2016-2017 we employed 12 paid staff supported by 2,710 volunteer hours working on 18 projects. We reached the successful conclusion to our major five year 'Connecting Landscapes' program. During 2016-2017 we:- Implemented on-ground landscape restoration projects with landholders and Landcare, resulting in 15 land management plans, 234 ha of remnant vegetation protected, 97 ha of land revegetated, 304 ha of land treated for pest plants and animals, and 405 ha of habitat enhanced.- Engaged and educated our community via social media, expert speaker events, field days, workshops, discussion forums and publications. We coordinated 35 education events and engaged 1,298 active participants. We developed 10 new brochures and 2 videos, and published 163 blog posts with 562 subscribers. These activities increased the capacity and skills of local people to identify, manage and enhance local environmental assets.- Monitored key biodiversity indicators across the landscape, with assistance from the local community, landholders and external experts. We coordinated 200 woodland bird surveys, 16 vegetation surveys, checking of 48 reptile monitoring sites, and monthly bird identification walks.- Provided ongoing support to over 30 local Landcare and Friends groups through our local Landcare Facilitator, auspicing and overseeing grant applications, and hosting Green Army teams to support local Landcare group initiatives. For further information please refer to Connecting Country's Annual Report for 2016-2017, available on our website (
