Description of charity's activities and outcomes
It is estimated more than 350 000 cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed annually around the world, with over 150 000 deaths. In Australian men, bladder cancer is the 8th most common cause of cancer. Patients and their loved ones often feel overwhelmed, anxious and scared after a diagnosis of cancer.

On the 18th of December 2013, after a long and courageous fight, Michael Demkiw passed away from aggressive metastatic bladder cancer. He was only 66. Also having a history of prostate cancer, without any knowledge of bladder cancer, this Dad of six put the symptoms of this awful disease down to side effects from his prior prostate treatments, and when definitive management was sought for his bladder tumour, it turns out it was too late.

Until then, no formal Bladder Cancer Awareness group in Australia existed, leaving many families without emotional or educational supports. It is on these grounds that the Demkiw sisters Stephanie and Zoe founded Australia’s first bladder cancer awareness group and charity in 2014. In doing so they aim to advance awareness, further education, support research and promote the prevention of BC in Australia.

To date BCA has held social and sporting functions, both in person and online to raise awareness about Haematuria and BC as a relatively common yet unheard of cancer in Australia. Primarily funds raised from these events in 2018 have supported patients with terminal BC and their families, allowing them to tick items off their 'bucket list', while they are still well enough to do so.
