Description of charity's activities and outcomes:
The purpose of Foundation 1901 is to: promote awareness and understanding of Australia's Federation with particular reference to the role of Australians in its formation and their role in any potential future reform; promote research, debate and discussion on Australia's Federation and federalism; and fund research or provide scholarships for the study of Australia's Federation and federalism. The Foundation was established in 2014 to coincide with the 125th anniversary of Henry Parkes Tenterfield Oration. It is a perpetual organisation that will adopt an innovative approach utilising: Modern advertising and branding techniques Specific projects and competitions Current and upcoming commemorative dates of Australias Federation achievements starting with the bicentenary of the birth of Sir Henry Parkes in 2015 Extensive research of previous government inquiries, academic research and contemporary media across law, politics, economics and history. The Foundations administration and activities will be funded through majority philanthropic and non-government funding and, as such, achieving long term sustainability for the organisation will be subject to being granted deductible gift recipient (DGR) status by the Commonwealth Government. Achieving this taxation status has been the priority focus of the Foundation during this reporting period. In addition, the Foundation continued to promote Federation issues at both high level through engagement with former Premiers, Prime Ministers, Governors, Governors-General and High Court Judges and with local communities. Community activities in 2017 have also included presentations to Ivanhoe U3A and MLC students, scanning of archived documents held by Australian Unity on the history of the Australian Natives Association and participation in conferences and discussion groups such as Converzatione and the newDemocracy symposium on "Trusted Long-Term Decision-Making". 2017 recorded the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Robert Garran, secretary of the drafting committees of the 1897 and 1898 Constitutional Conventions and subsequently the Commonwealth's first public servant as Secretary, Department of the Attorney-General, a role he held for 32 years.
