Description of charity's activities and outcomes
Some recent 2018 APWF successes for dogs and cats:
IMPORTANT INGREDIENTS FOR SAVING LIVES
- We determined the key factors that enabled RSPCA Queensland to reduce its killing of cats from 58% to 15% in five years: offsite adoptions, innovative advertising of adoption cats, foster carers and waiting 72 hours before sociability assessments.
WORLD’S FIRST LOST CAT RESEARCH
- We discovered where lost cats go and how to find them. This will help reunite many lost cats with their families.
STRAY CAT RESEARCH
- We determined that desexing then returning stray cats reduces urban stray cat numbers by 31% in just over two years. It is more effective – and humane - than typical council trapping programs where most of the cats are killed.
WHY SOME POUNDS HAVE HIGH LIFE SAVING RATES AND OTHER DO NOT?
- Our research found Victorian pounds kill between 0% to 40% of dogs and 7% - 98% of cats. Why such a difference? We found safer pounds reunite more animals with their families and have higher adoption rates using strategies such as partnering with rescue and foster groups.
