Description of charity's activities and outcomes
We know a bike is a life changing object the world over.In the developing world it is life changing on a different scale. It allows access to health care, education, economic opportunity and wider community.Sustainable transport is a big lever in breaking the poverty cycle a bike means you can travel twice as far, twice as fast and carry four times the load this alone is enough to provide a change in circumstance that is profound and lasting but theres more to this project than just that. Each of the 40 ft shipping containers that Bicycles For Humanity sends becomes a bike workshop providing employment, skills, training, business, opportunity and economic development for the community in which its placed. Each of these Bicycle Empowerment Centres (BEC) becomes a self sustaining entity fitting very cleanly into the model of micro-financed small business that is lately seen as one of the central ways for the developing world to move away from aid dependence.Statement of PurposeThe Association Bicycles for Humanity Melbourne is a not-for-profit, non-political entity established and located in Australia for the sole charitable purpose of alleviating poverty by improving access to health care, education and social services where inadequate transportation is a major barrier. The means by which the Association aims to achieve its object in clause 3.1 include:(a) collecting disused (but in working order) bicycles, spare parts, tools and accessories from Victoria, Australia;(b) shipping the bicycles, spare parts, tools and accessories to communities in need in Australia as well as overseas, particularly in African and other developing countries (either directly or through partnership with overseas aid organisations);(c) developing partnerships with key organisations in Australia and overseas with similar objectives;(d) working with overseas partner organisations which provide logistical support, training and materials to overseas communities to achieve a similar objective;(e) raising money to ensure the above actions can be carried out;(f) developing financial sustainability to ensure the ongoing viability of the Association;(g) carrying out the Associations activities in a fiscally transparent manner;(h) raising awareness of transport issues and the impact that lack of transport can have, in order to increase participation in the Association and the Associations objectives; and(i) do all things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the objective in clause 3.1 or the means to attain it.
