Description of charity's activities and outcomes
Fieldwork for the long-term research on eastern Australian humpback whales was undertaken in Hervey Bay during September 2016 abaord the annual whale research expedition. Two scientific publicatrions are in review with the Journal of Cetacean Research and Management. The first is results from a study of humpbacks whales in the western Antarctic feeding areas and their relationship to humpback whale breeding groups in east Africa, Western Australia and eastern Australia. The second is a study of the movements of humpback whales from Hervey Bay to feeding areas in Antarctica which revealed the unusual movements of a mother and calf photographed in Hervey Bay and travelling to a feeding area in western Antarctica. The public awareness and education program was sustained throughout the 2015/2016 year, with continued management, maintenance and updating of The Oceania Project, iWhales and Songlines websites and six social media outlets. Social media reach has achieved over 9 million public views of educational films on The Oceania Prjoect's YouTube channels while educational information and whalesong recordings now reach an audience of over 20 million people via The Oceania Project FaceBook and SoundCloud pages. A collaboration with Scientists from the University of Southern Queensland and Griffiths University is in process to investigate environmental factors influencing the use of habitat and migratory pathways by Humpback whales along the east coast of Australia. The Oceania Project was involved in extensive media activity during the 2016 humpback whale migration providing educational information to the Public through television, radio and print media. Dr Wally Franklin featured in a UK Television production on Humpback whales in Hervey Bay. Finally work is progressing on a further four manuscripts for scientific journals on the classes of whales utilising Hervey Bay, behaviour of Humpback whales in Hervey Bay, population dynamics of humpback whales using Hervey Bay and photo-identification methodology used in studying Humpback whales.
