Description of charity's activities and outcomes
In 2016, Gondwana Choirs comprehensive programcontinued to grow in scope and reputation, providingleadership in choral training and performance. In2016, 936 young people participated in the coreintensive programs the Sydney Childrens Choir,Gondwana National Choirs and the GondwanaIndigenous Childrens Choir. Significantly, in January2016 the Gondwana Indigenous Childrens Choirattended National Choral School, made possiblethrough extensive fundraising, and culminating in theworld premiere performance of Spinifex Gum - a songcycle by Felix Riebl. Gondwana Choirs presented 16world premiere performances of new work by Australiancomposers, unique programs to develop emergingconductors and composers, and professional learningexperiences for educators and community musicleaders.Gondwana Choirs' artistic reputation is supportedby invitations to collaborate with some of Australiasleading arts organisations and artists. In 2016 ourensembles performed with the Sydney SymphonyOrchestra, presenting the Australian premiere of ThePied Piper (Sydney Childrens Choir); The AustraliaEnsemble as guest artists for a subscription seriesconcert (Sydney Childrens Choir); for Kaldor Public ArtProjects barrangal dyara (skin and bones) (GondwanaIndigenous Childrens Choir and Sydney ChildrensChoir); and commenced on a new collaboration withOpera Australia, preparing the Childrens Chorusfor two program performed in early 2017 (SydneyChildrens Choir).In addition to numerous commercial recordings, 2016saw Gondwana Choirs realise several significantindependent recording projects. Hooray for Song! isa collection of songs for young people, performed byyoung people. Featuring music entirely by Australiancomposers, this recording models the best choralsinging for young voices and is accompanied by abeautifully presented illustrated booklet. One review ofthe recording stated, "Crystal clear in tone, a seamlessblend ... unerring in pitch and secure in rhythm andtheir sense of ensemble." Gondwana Chorales debutCD, Soar was released also in 2016. It includes arange of Australian and international repertoire, andreceived a warm response for "the inimitable sound ofthe ensemble which reflects expert musicianship, greatversatility and sophistication".The company reported a pleasing surplus result dueto careful controls on expenditure, and significantfundraising in 2016. There was a strong communityresponse to the announcement regarding thediscontinuation of multi-year Federal Governmentfunding from the Australia Council, including animmediate fundraising result with greatly increaseddonations towards the End of Financial Year campaign.
