Description of charity's activities and outcomes
Geomancia is dedicated to the advancement of environmental education, the promotion of geoscience, and the application of best practice techniques in natural resource management. Our goal is to build capacity and expertise within communities to record, access and share information so that NRM decisions are better informed and support sustainable land use. We provide educational resources, vocational training, spatial information, technical support and field survey technology. Our work is delivered through three interconnected programs: (1) Building Community Capacity - Skilled and empowered; (2) Integrated Natural Resource Management - Geoscience at work; and (3) Research and Development - New approaches, smarter systems. In our first year as a registered charity, Geomancia undertook a major partnership and grant acquisition drive to source financial and in-kind support for our work. Through these efforts, we developed a number of proposals to support Indigenous land managers, farming communities, remote communities, and NGOs, covering regions throughout Australia including Cape York, Arnhem Land, and western NSW. With the assistance of funds from the Norman Wettenhall Foundation, the Geomancia-designed Dragonfly Field Survey and Mapping Toolkit was delivered to Olkola Indigenous Land Managers in Cape York, along with the requisite training at Cooktown in Queensland. Two Olkola staff are now certified in the use of the system including GPS navigation; map reading; waypoint creation; track recording and mapping; field survey data collection; file management; data sharing; and database design. It is anticipated that Olkola will use the system to monitor the nest sites of the endangered Golden-shouldered parrot (Psephotus chrysopterygius) and for other land management and cultural purposes. The project was an unqualified success and represents the first deployment of the Dragonfly system to an Indigenous land management group.Geomancia also provided considerable support to Landcare over the period at both a NSW State and regional level. We worked with Landcare NSW, LachLandcare inc. and various local Landcare groups, principally to provide administrative and technical support. We supported Landcare NSW with business management services and helped with fundraising activities. Our work with LachLandcare Inc. helped secure over $800,000 in grant funding to employ six staff who now work across the Lachlan catchment area. We also designed and produced a Landcare Coordinators kit (hardware, software, mobile phone, policies and procedures) that was delivered to LachLandcare Inc. and Upper Lachlan Landcare to support their newly appointed staff.Further information on our activities can be found online at http://geomancia.com.au/. We also intend to publish an annual report which will be downloadable from the website. Feel free to contact us directly to learn more about our ongoing work.
