Description of charity’s activities and outcomes
Reef Check Australia believes in protecting reefs and oceans by empowering people. We are an innovative environmental charity dedicated to protecting to engaging the community in hands-on reef research and education. Our teams are part of a worldwide network of trained volunteers that regularly monitor and report on reef health in more than 90 countries using the standardised Reef Check scientific survey method. Our programs offer cost-effective solutions that empower communities to take an active role in understanding, managing and saving their local reef resources.Activities in 2013-14 included:-Collecting more than 750kg of rubbish from beaches and oceans across Queensland. We have also been part of the Clean Straddie Working Group, with more than 20 representatives working together to reduce coastal and marine debris on North Stradbroke Island through clean ups, data collection, source reduction initiatives and community education. -Reaching out to more than 5,000 people through community events and workshops about ways that everyone can take part in protecting their local environment.-Training volunteers in Reef Check monitoring methods, including snorkel-based protocols working with the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation and SEQ Catchments in Moreton Bay.-Our volunteer survey teams collected data on 61 reef sites in Queensland, including expanding initiatives on the Fraser Coast and Heron Island. -We have continued to build on the REEFSearch reef identification and observation program through school workshops, community events and supporting groups to implement the program in their local area. Expanded on the online REEFSearch Hub and communications materials to help engage more participants.-A long-term assessment of data has been underway and will be reported in 2014-15.
