Description of charity's activities and outcomes
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals New South Wales (RSPCA) is a charity operating in New South Wales that promotes animal welfare. It is the oldest and largest animal welfare organisation in Australia. This year saw an increase in animals surrendered or seized from intensive breeding facilities and hoarders. Numerous dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, ferrets and horses were taken into custody as a result of investigations. In 2015/16, the RSPCA investigated 14,955 cruelty complaints, rehomed 14,627 animals and cared for another 10,063 animals. In 2013 we commenced a strategy that focussed on education. As an organisation we believe that if we teach a child empathy for all living things then they will naturally support a world that values humane treatment towards animals. We have also invested in community-based programs that help people and their pets. In 2015/16 the Community Animal Welfare Scheme (CAWS) which had been running for some years in regional New South Wales was introduced into metropolitan areas, in particular South West Sydney. Supported by Sydney University Veterinary School, this program helps low income pet owners with vaccinations, vet checks and desexing. It is also a practical way of providing one-on-one education about responsible pet ownership. This valuable program is helping to reduce animal intake in these areas and improving advocacy for the work we do.Programs like this will help ensure that animals will have a better chance of remaining in the care of their owners as opposed to a surrender of custody to our shelters. It also means that our shelters are ready for those cases where early intervention was unsuccessful. By keeping as many animals as possible with their owners we can ensure there is always space for the victims of cruelty and neglect.During the year continued to host events like Million Paws Walk and Cupcake Day with representation through our shelters and volunteer branches throughout the state. The revenue for RSPCA is derived primarily from donations and legacies as well as income from its veterinary practices, small retail stores and specific one-off government grants from time to time. In 2015/16 RSPCA raised or was bequeathed a total of $27.3M.
