Description of charity's activities and outcomes
Reef Check Australia believes in protecting reefs and oceans by empowering people. We are an innovative environmental charity dedicated to building community capacity to understand, appreciate and protect oceans. Our three core activities are:INSPIRING reef-minded people: We connect people with reef science by providing an unbiased source of accessible, meaningful and accurate information about reef health.ENGAGING volunteers in reef health monitoring: We foster best-practice reef citizen science programs by providing our volunteers with the training, resources and networks to collect and share globally-standardised reef health data for science and management.EMPOWERING local conservation action for the Reef: We create opportunities for people and communities to identify how they can help tackle reef health issues with local on-ground action through knowledge, tools, resources and support. In 2016-17, our trained volunteers conducted 83 surveys in Queensland from Port Douglas to the Gold Coast, and 2 in Western Australia. Outcomes for utilising this unique citizen science dataset included reporting on reef habitat mapping results for Moreton Bay with UQs Remote Sensing Research Centre & Healthy Land and Water with data use in the regional report card, coordinating a pilot project to use data from Heron Island for the Fitzroy Basin Report Card, 6 reports, and 2 peer reviewed papers using RCA data. We further developed community engagement capacity by building Reef Ambassador programs for Townsville and Brisbane to empower trained volunteers to connect with thousands in these local communities. We also worked with Tangaroa Blue on source reduction plans that provide an ongoing resource for the Brisbane region in addressing key debris issues with the community and helped to launch the first ever Seaside Scavenge clean up events in North Queensland. Overall, this year has focused on building capacity and networks in regional hub areas in Townsville, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast to build strong hubs that foster a network of citizen science, community outreach and positive local action to empower people to protect reefs and oceans. We will continue expanding this regional hub model in 2018. You can also see our 2017 (calendar year) summary report at: https://spark.adobe.com/page/dvSA12RLToybk/
