Summary of activities

The Youth Food Movement Australia’s (YFM) mission is to grow a generation of young Australians empowered with the ability to make healthy and sustainable food choices. Our events and campaigns are achieving this by redefining what it means to be ‘healthy’ - to encompass healthy producers and consumers and a healthy natural environment. To achieve our charitable purpose we build the skills, knowledge and experiences young people (aged 18-35) have around food. This allows them to understand the impact of and build value for the food they buy, eat and share. Our objectives are to: 1. Educate and empower consumers to make informed decisions regarding food systems; including, health, environmental, biodiversity and equitable issues surrounding how food is bought, consumed and disposed of locally and in Australia. 2. Facilitate and organise networks and events for producers and consumers to strengthen individual activism and community projects and to raise awareness of food related issues as a platform for knowledge exchange and communication. To achieve our charitable purpose in 2017 YFM conducted the following activities: > Facilitated a 4 month youth ‘change-maker’ program, Upstart, in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Participants were trained in practical skills for engaging youth communities in food systems problems, including communications, marketing, project and event management, teamwork, self reflection and evaluation. > Participants in the project held local community food events, attended by young people around the country, which engaged young people in a discussion. > Ran a digital food-waste avoidance campaign for young people, Salvage Supperclub, in partnership with City of Melbourne, Sustainability Victoria, City of Parramatta and Inner West Council The campaign was designed to empower young Australians to engage their peers around saving food in a non-judgmental, delicious way that proved just how simple it can be to cook with what you’ve got. > Published original articles on our online library and across our social media channels, giving young adults a voice and a mechanism to learn from each other. By sharing real experiences we inspire other young people to take action on food issues.
