Summary of activities

We support people to find and sustain support groups to improve their health. We help groups across the broad spectrum of health , including genetic conditions, chronic disease, addiction, grief and loss, abuse, carer responsibilities and mental health. Self Help Queensland continues to adopt a “no wrong door” approach to its public enquiries, possibly one in three enquiries are about support for a major health issue, not necessarily to find a self-help/support group. The organisation uses its extensive knowledge of the not-for-profit sector and the health system to provide appropriate referrals. Approximately half a dozen calls or emails are received from the public each week. Mental health issues represent a growing percent of telephone calls. Queries of our extensive on-line group database covered many topics with the most common search relating to autism spectrum disorders. 90% of directory searches are from new users. The organisation has supported approximately 400 groups in 2017/18, some with detailed governance and operating support and others with the newsletter and small enquiries.
