Summary of activities

The Council represents more than 45 member groups who in turn represent over 25,000 supporters. We harness the collective expertise and experience of our member groups and networks and use this expertise to promote sound environment policy. We work collaboratively with Government, business and the community to achieve the highest quality environment for Canberra and its region. The Objectives of the Conservation Council include: “(i) maintain, preserve and enhance the quality of the natural, urban and rural environment and the integrity of ecological systems and processes; (ii) preserve and safeguard the natural, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage; and (iii) promote community understanding of the common responsibility for the maintenance of a healthy and sustainable environment, on which all life ultimately depends.” The Conservation Council ACT Region Strategic Plan 2015-2020 sets out our mission: “To influence government, business and community through effective public policy and engagement to protect nature.” We obtain monetary resources to achieve these objectives and carry out our mission through a combination of ACT government funding, fundraising and donations. Tax-deductible donations are made to the Bogong Fund and funds are transferred from the fund to the Conservation Council’s general fund to carry out these purposes. Our main expenditure is staff who undertake advocacy, community campaigns, education, research, engagement, administration, volunteer liaison and all other activities required to maintain a small organisation. We produce electronic newsletters and social media material so most of the costs are in staff time, not materials. We also maintain good governance through reports to the Conservation Council Board and committees and through a specific member group newsletter. We have adopted policies including the Board Members Fiduciary Obligations policy to help maintain governance standards.
