Summary of activities

To support their production of Australian Carbon Credit Units and their engagement with the Emissions Reduction Fund, the Indigenous Ranger groups with responsibility for the fire project areas in Arnhem Land came together to form an entity - Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (NT) Limited. The objective of ALFA (NT) Ltd is to support Aboriginal land management with funding generated through the sale of Australian Carbon Credit Units. ALFA (NT) Limited, is a company limited by guarantee and owned exclusively by Aboriginal people with custodial responsibility for those parts of Arnhem Land under active bushfire management. ALFA (NT) Limited is a not for profit company committed to the improvement of the lives of its owners and to the continuing beneficial management of a vast area of country of high conservation value. Most importantly, the company emphasizes the high value of the co-benefits generated by burning activity. Aboriginal people are supported in returning to and remaining on their country and bio-diversity, some of it critically endangered, is protected. The knowledge of old people is preserved and transferred to younger generations. Aboriginal languages are maintained and participants in land management activity enjoy higher standards of mental and physical health. During the financial year ending 30th June 2020, ALFA (NT) Limited, generated and sold more than 300,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units ACCUs from within the company’s registered eligible offsets project areas. Revenue from the sale of these ACCUs was distributed to the Indigenous Ranger groups in the project areas to be spent in line with the not-for-profit objectives of the company.
