When COVID-19 emerged in 2020, Free 3D Hands decided to make free face shields for essential workers − a shift from its regular activity of making assistive devices such as 3D-printed hands for people who need them.
Founder and Director Mat Bowtell said it launched a marketing campaign to raise funds for the new venture, and published amounts raised from the public.
“The best thing you can do is be completely open and transparent with your intentions and how funds donated are going to be used.”
“Once we were advised that we would get funding from the government, we immediately ended our community fundraising campaign... We needed to make sure that we didn’t ask [the public] for more than we needed.”
