The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) has today issued a notice of intention to revoke close to two hundred charities it believes are no longer operating.

Despite multiple attempts, the ACNC has not been able to reach these charities during its nearly three years of operation. Letters have been returned unopened, emails have bounced and phone numbers have been disconnected.

ACNC Commissioner, Susan Pascoe AM, said revocation was necessary in order to maintain the integrity of the Charity Register - Australia's first searchable, online database of Australia's registered charities.

“We have made multiple attempts over the years to contact these charities and we have now concluded that they are inactive or no longer operating," Ms Pascoe said.

“We are continuously reviewing the data on the Charity Register, which is available free of charge at, to ensure members of the public have access to accurate and up-to-date information.

"Members of the public expect that only charities that are active and compliant with their obligations remain registered with the ACNC.

“This group of charities must contact the ACNC before 11 November 2015 to maintain their registration.”

Ms Pascoe also warned a further 8 000 charities that they will soon be at risk of revocation if they don’t submit overdue reporting.

“Thousands of charities are nearly a year overdue with their 2014 Annual Information Statement," Ms Pascoe said.

"These charities already have a red-mark on their Charity Register listing to indicate to the public that the charity has not met its obligations.

“If these charities miss the deadline for submitting the 2015 Annual Information Statement, which is now fast approaching, they will lose their charity status.

“The ACNC takes a firm but fair approach to compliance, but will not tolerate persistent failure to meet obligations.

"To maintain registration with the ACNC, charities with overdue 2014 Annual Information Statements should submit their outstanding reports as soon as possible."

ACNC registration is required to access a number of Commonwealth charity tax concessions, including income tax exemption, fringe benefit rebates/exemption and GST rebates. Some deductible gift recipient (DGR) categories require charities to be registered with the ACNC to receive DGR status.

Ms Pascoe said the ACNC will soon be reminding all charities to submit their 2015 Annual Information Statement.

“Charities that use a standard financial year of 1 July to 30 June can expect to receive a reminder in the mail or via email in the coming weeks. Charities that use other reporting periods will receive their reminder closer to the due date.
