Summary of activities
The committee initially focussed on preparing a season for 2020 deciding on a showcase (3rd wheel), small show (Be More Chill) and large show (Legally Blonde). With the Parade College auditorium unavailable for use in 2020 the committee decided to look at more central and accessible locations with the Brunswick Mechanics Institute booked for 3rd wheel and the Darebin Arts Centre was secured for Waterdale’s 2nd and 3rd show.
After securing an MD, auditions and rehearsals were held in early 2020 for 3rd wheel with performances scheduled for early April. Production team interviews were held for Be More Chill with an all female prod team assigned and auditions booked. Covid-19 restrictions first implemented in March brought on the postponement of Be More Chill and Legally Blonde until 2021. The final rehearsal of 3rd wheel was filmed to enable quick resumption of the season with the aim to put on the production in 2020 when and if restrictions allow.
In early 2020, Waterdale was given notice to vacate the factory located in Parker St Preston. Significant effort was made by the committee and numerous volunteers to downsize costumes and sets, clear-out the factory, secure and move to a new factory location. This was a huge effort in a small timeframe. Thankyou to everyone who helped with this.
Significant fundraising efforts were undertaken with 5 BBQ’s held in the FY19-20 financial year and many chocolate boxes sold. Additionally Waterdale participated in the Grill’d Local Matters campaign which also gave the opportunity for some social catch-up nights. A number of grants were applied for, with Waterdale successful in a $2,000 volunteer’s grant.
Waterdale moved it’s financial software from Quikbooks to Xero to enable more functionality, and better cost transparency. In aligning the financial information a decision was made to write-off the incorrect allocations of GST.
Waterdales’s social media presence was increased with significantly higher engagement in our posting on facebook and instagram and 235 new followers (14% increase) since November 2019. In addition to social burger nights, viewings were held with the Wizard of Oz and 3rd Wheel casts. The Waterdale committee has started conversations with other community theatre groups in the northern and western suburbs in an effort to work more collaboratively and help support each other.
