Summary of activities

Professional staff work across WA and Tasmania to provide individualised home-based services and offer support and training to help people to build confidence and lead fulfilling and independent lives. Social workers offered counselling, support, information and advice that assisted people to come to terms with the emotional impact of vision loss. Occupational therapists offered support and training in daily living skills ranging from household management to personal care. They also provided advice and special equipment to help people who are blind or vision impaired live independently. Orientation & Mobility Instructors offered training for people to travel safely and independently through their environment. This included the use of special aids including white canes. Guide Dog Instructors trained Guide Dog puppies, worked with Guide Dogs, and supported Guide Dog owners. Specialist staff for children - including Speech Pathologists, Developmental Psychologists and Paediatric Physiotherapists - worked on Early Intervention Programs. Recreation Officers provided advice, training and support so that people could participate in recreation, leisure and sporting activities of their choice. Braille teachers and production assistants provided a wide range of reading materials in Braille. Library and audio production staff provided materials in alternate formats to clients.
