Summary of activities

The Thin Green Line Foundation protects and conserves the natural environment by encouraging and assisting individuals to work as Rangers. Our work is focused on supporting Rangers in developing nations, conflict zones and indigenous Rangers in Australia and abroad. We protect nature's protectors. In 2016-17, The Foundation funded Ranger programs and provided support to widows and orphans of Rangers killed in the line of duty. This support was delivered across Africa, Asia, Central America, South America and Oceania. This year, the Foundation received the largest amount of donations in its 10 year history, raising revenue of $2.12 million and in turn providing $1.17 million to support 21 Ranger projects internationally.Funding this year was primarily awarded to programs that focused on the development of Ranger capability and capacity. The Foundation supported a range of conservation programs that prevent or minimise the risk of Rangers being injured or killed during their work. This is delivered via training programs and provision of equipment, and included a major donation of Ranger uniforms. In 2016-17, the Foundation continued to support knowledge exchange among Rangers around the world. This provides opportunities for Rangers to meet and share their experiences, in turn building comradery and knowledge that can be applied in the field. This was particularly demonstrated through the development of an International Ranger Exchange Program. The Foundation continued to support Rangers who have been injured and widow/widowers and families of Rangers killed in the line of duty. This year, this support included the provision of $78k to support to orphans and widows. In 2016-17, The Foundation's work continued building a strong profile on the importance of the role of Rangers in the community and at the front-line of conservation. This is through numerous awareness-raising projects and activities, including presentations to schools, corporate and government agencies, and festivals and congresses. This was highlighted through our presence at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii and presentation at the US State Department's annual celebration of World Wildlife Day in Washington DC.Further details on our activities and outcomes can be found at www.thingreenline.org.au
