Summary of activities

The Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT) comprises members from diverse scientific, technical, medical and nursing backgrounds working the areas of blood transfusion and transfusion medicine in Australia and New Zealand. Our Society worked to promote best practice in clinical and laboratory transfusion medicine, through the development of guidelines and position statements. Promoting transfusion education and research is an important aspect of the Societies work during the year. This year the Society collaborated with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) to produce three educational webinars. Our combined Annual Scientific Meeting, jointly hosted with the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ) and Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia and New Zealand (THANZ) was held in Brisbane. The Blood 2018 meeting had a line-up of international and local speakers, discussing a diverse range of scientific and clinical topics and was attended by about 1,000 delegates. This year the Society successfully secured the non-European regional congress of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) to be held in Australia in 2021. The Society advocates for research in transfusion medicine and science in Australasia and provides an annual Research grant to promote and develop research in transfusion-related areas. The Society provides a number of travel grants to fund members to attend international conferences and our Annual Scientific meeting. In collaboration with ISBT, the Society funded travel grants to allow health professionals from resource-poor countries in South East Asia and the Pacific to attend our Annual Scientific Meeting so that they could learn of recent developments in haematology and blood transfusion.
