Summary of activities

Seed Collection, Plant Propagation and Distribution100 endemic plant species representative of remnant plant communities at risk or degraded in the regional Geraldton area were propagated at the Drylands Foundations nursery. 25,000 plants were produced for sale and distribution to 400 regional community members and local government for native gardens, revegetation projects and farmsEnvironmental education and advice was disseminated with plants at local sustainability events, local markets and the Farm Nursery. This increased the communitys interest, care and recognition of flora biodiversity, demonstrated by repeat custom and preferential selection of endemic species. Over 120 species of locally acclimatised organic non-hybrid heirloom seeds were regrown to maintain the Foundations seedbank. 220 gardeners plus five outlets, bought these seeds for both home and community gardens. These seeds grown locally enable gardeners to use less chemical inputs, minimising detrimental environmental impacts from food production.Soil Conservation and Soil Biology ResearchEnergy efficient small scale composting and worm systems as household solutions to recycle household kitchen wastes and build soil fertility were trialled in the Foundations organic gardens. Education and Training 24 adult volunteers engaged with the Foundations on-farm activities which included learning skills in nursery propagation, organic production, property rehabilitation and flora biodiversity and green building techniques. Social media was used to promote activities and raise awareness of local environmental issues along with upgrades to the website. Educational tours promoting the Foundations work were conducted for Australian Permaculture Convergence and the local Geraldton Police and Community Youth Group.Work experience in organic horticulture and recycling projects was provided for agricultural students from Curtain University.Bee Keeping mentoring was provided to local community members. Develop and Maintain Demonstration FacilitiesFarm facilities and demonstration sites have been upgraded and maintained, with construction of on-site Green building workshop and study facilities progressing.Partnering with Similar OrganisationsCarob grafting trials commenced in partnership with Carob Australia. A grant of $4700 was received in June 2016 from WA Government Royalties for Regions Community Chest Grant. Completion date December 2017.NACC engaged the Foundation to provide workshops in Midwest regional towns.
