Summary of activities

We are the only organisation in Australia to focus entirely on clinical and surgical cardiothoracic conditions. In 2019, The Baird Institute continued to make a difference to patients living with heart and lung disease. We have continued to develop four major areas of research which essentially and appropriately mirror our major clinical programs. These are Aortic Aneurysm and Vascular Modelling Research, Lung Cancer Research, Innovative Surgical Techniques and Devices and finally Robotics. Support from our donors has a pivotal impact upon ensuring that these specific areas of research continue and that the study of cardiac disease, lung disease, genetics and blood vessel abnormalities can be better understood and interventions developed. This year we have reinvigorated our educational scholarships and grants program and have issued three scholarships and three grants in 2019 to cardiothoracic surgical trainees and registrars. The aim of our scholarship and grants program is to assist those medical students and trainee surgeons who would like to begin a career in academic surgery. There are many reasons to pursue a career in academic surgery including the ability to provide the best patient care, to discover and apply new knowledge to surgical problems, to teach trainees and surgeons across the world and to be part of innovation and change. The Baird Institute, by providing these scholarships and grants, assists medical students and trainee surgeons in this endeavour. In 2019, we established two support groups, one for heart surgery patients and the other for lung surgery patients. These groups provide education and support to patients, their families, carers and friends. The Baird Institute's mission is to foster research and apply science to improve the outcomes for patients facing heart or lung surgery. Our support groups focus on the power of bringing people with heart and lung disease together, to share their experiences and by so doing, to support each other pre and post surgery.
