Summary of activities

We provide support to hearing-impaired young people at one school, the Wangsel Institute for Young People with Hearing Impairment, in Bhutan, assessing their needs, supplying and fitting hearing aids, and monitoring their use. We continue to support their teachers to improve the auditory-verbal program for some of these students. We are developing relationships with the Ministries of Health and Education to introduce the early detection of hearing impairment and the provision of appropriate intervention as well as technical, educational and social programs to prepare children for early literacy learning in schools. We have helped the Bhutanese Government modernise their pre-primary and primary English language curriculum and have trained teachers to introduce phonics. The improved early literacy teaching will benefit all young people on Bhutan, including those with hearing impairment when they enter mainstream schools.
