The Academy sponsors public lectures, seminars and debates.
• 31 October 2019, Brisbane. Patron’s Address. The Chief Justice, the Hon Susan Kiefel AC, delivered the Academy’s Patron’s Address for 2019 on “The Academy and the Courts: what do they mean to each other today?”
• 5 August 2019, Canberra. Joint panel to discuss the findings from the International Bar Association’s 2019 report “Us Too? Bullying and Sexual Harassment in the Legal Profession”. The co-hosts were the International Bar Association, the Australian National University, the Law Council of Australia, the ACT Law Society and the ACT Bar Association.
• 22 August 2019, annual joint event with the Australian Academy of Science. A hypothetical set of facts on climate change—the law and the science. The Moderator was Academy Fellow, Mr Justin Gleeson SC of the NSW Bar and a panel of six experts.
• 4 September 2019, Melbourne. Sir Nicholas Blake gave the public lecture on “Democracy, Human Rights and the Judiciary: the common law and the wider world”.
• 19 September 2019, Darwin. The Annual Austin Asche Oration in Law and Governance, Ms Liz Broderick AO spoke on “The Journey of a Restless Advocate: Creating a more Gender Equal Australia”.
• 19 September 2019, Canberra. Michael Coper roundtable. The Commonwealth Solicitor-General, Dr Stephen Donaghue QC spoke of “Current Issues in Australian Constitutional Law.
• 19 January 2020, Canberra. Professor James Stellios FAAL of the ANU law school gave an address and spoke on the relationship between life as an academic and as a legal practitioner.
• 19 February 2020, Canberra. Michael Coper Roundtable. Mr Graeme Neate AM spoke on "Native title--concepts, challenges and creative outcomes".
• 27 February 2020, Perth. A presentation by Professor Kate Lewins of the law school at Murdoch University, the topic was "Cruise Ship Passengers and Australian Law - Contracts, Consumer Protection, Convention?"
• 18 June 2020, Canberra and Online. Professor Don Rothwell led a discussion on “Covid-19 and the International Cruise Industry”. The Chair was Professor Stephen Bottomley.
• 24 June 2020, Perth and Online. Ms Jessica Kerr, a PhD candidate in the School of Law at the University of Western Australia led a discussion in the area of her research, “Making Judges in Commonwealth Judiciaries”.
Prizes
• Annual Essay Prize 2019 - $10,000 won by Dr Ellen Rock of the UTS School of Law, for her essay on “Resolving Conflicts at the Interface between Public and Private Law”.
• Honours Prize 2019 - $1500 won by Kate Mani of Monash University, whose topic was “Social Media Chatter, Googling Jurors and the Determined Searcher: How the Internet is Threatening the Efficacy of Suppression Orders”.
• Michael Coper Memorial Prize 2019 - $1500 won by Ms Hennie Lui for her paper “A Total Ban on Gene Doping: not the Most Gen-IUS Idea”.
