Charities and not-for-profits are being invited to join an online community of practice as part of a new project to provide tailored cyber support for the sector.

The ACNC is partnering with the Department of Home Affairs on a project that will establish a Not-for-Profit Cyber Uplift Community of Practice.

The community of practice will provide opportunities for charities and other not-for-profits to share knowledge, learn from one another, and access cyber security events and resources. Together, these activities will help organisations strengthen their cyber safety skills and build confidence in managing online risks.

ACNC Commissioner Sue Woodward AM said cyber security is a risk for all organisations.

‘Charities and other not-for-profits, whether small or large, hold a significant amount of sensitive personal data. This includes the names of donors, members, volunteers, staff and the people who use their services,’ Ms Woodward said.

‘It’s important to be mindful of how to minimise the risks of that data being taken and misused if there is an attack on your computer systems.

‘The community of practice will make it easier for organisations to strengthen their cyber security, through opportunities to learn more about practices that strengthen governance and minimise risks.

‘It’s great to be working with government partners to help build the sector’s cyber security capability, knowledge and resilience,’ Ms Woodward said.

The project is an action under the 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy and is being delivered with the support of the Australian Signals Directorate and the Department of Social Services.

Charities and not-for-profits are invited to join the online launch event of the new community of practice group on Wednesday 26 August from 1pm to 2pm (Sydney/Melbourne time).

‘I’d really encourage charities to join and participate in the community of practice as it will be an efficient way of checking your cyber hygiene and learning cyber security tips. It’s free to join. People can learn more at the online launch which will bring together government and sector experts to talk about current cyber security threats, available support services and resources tailored specifically to the not-for-profit sector,’ Ms Woodward said.

‘The kick-off event is a great opportunity to find out more about the group and learn some practical cyber security tips to take back to your charity and implement.’
