The ACNC is urging charities and donors to be on the lookout for scams.
The National Anti-Scam Centre’s Scamwatch data shows that reported losses for fake charities scams have increased by 94% compared to the same period in 2024. It’s as important as ever to be on watch for suspicious activity.
Led by the National Anti-Scam Centre, Scams Awareness Week is an annual reminder that we all need to be cautious of scams.
From 25-29 August 2025, this year’s theme “Stop. Check. Protect” highlights the 3 simple steps anyone can take to keep safe from scammers.
1. Stop
Don’t give money or your information to anyone if you are unsure. Scammers may pretend to be from charities, or other organisations you know and trust. They will offer to help you or ask you to verify your identity with them.
2. Check
Ask yourself if the message or call is fake. Never click a link in a text message. Only contact charities using information from their official websites. If you’re unsure, check the ACNC Charity Register to find the official website and contact information of a registered charity.
3. Protect
Act quickly if something feels wrong. Contact your bank if you notice unusual activity or if a scammer gets your money or information. Seek help and report the scam to Scamwatch. When you report scams, you help stop the scam and warn others.
Scams in Australia are under-reported, so the data available can only tell us part of the story. If you’ve been the victim of a scam or are suspicious of a donation request, report it to Scamwatch.
Your reports help the National Anti-Scam Centre warn others about current scams, monitor trends, and disrupt scams where possible.
Advice for charities
Remaining vigilant against scammers should always be a priority. Conduct regular reviews of your cyber security measures and report any scams to Scamwatch.
