Bushfire charity reviews find Red Cross, WIRES and NSW RFS Trust to be credible and professional in managing donations

Hundreds of Australian charities are at risk of losing their registration with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) for twice failing to submit their Annual Information Statements.

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) tabled its 2019–20 annual report today. ACNC Commissioner the Hon Dr Gary Johns said the annual report highlights the Commission’s achievements in a year of unprecedented challenges for the community and the charity sector.

New reforms will further reduce the red tape burden for charities in Western Australia. Under the reforms, duplicated reporting requirements for incorporated associations in Western Australia will be removed. Associations will only need to report to the ACNC using the Annual Information Statement. They will not need to submit a separate annual statement to Consumer Protection.

From today, charities will only need to notify Consumer Affairs Victoria of their intent to fundraise to become a registered fundraiser. Additionally, charities that fundraise in Victoria are no longer required to submit an annual return to Consumer Affairs Victoria. Instead, charities can submit the Annual Information Statement to the ACNC

Charity scams are on the rise, increasing nearly 70% since 2019, according to figures released for Scams Awareness Week, 17-21 August 2020.

The work of charities will soon become more visible due to enhancements to the ACNC Charity Register.

Major reforms are now in force which lift the red tape burden on WA charities, reducing their administration costs and resulting in more money being made available to charity recipients.
