Context
The ACNC recognises the significant opportunities that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide in improving our productivity and our ability to support charities and build capability in the charity sector.
We also recognise that AI must be used in a safe, responsible and ethical manner.
This transparency statement outlines our approach to AI adoption, and how we will comply with the Government’s Policy for the responsible use of AI in government.
How we define AI
The ACNC uses the Government definition of AI:
An AI system is a machine-based system that, for explicit or implicit objectives, infer from the input it receives, how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations, or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments. Different AI systems vary in their levels of autonomy and adaptiveness after deployment.
How we are currently using AI
When describing AI, we use the Government’s classification system which classifies AI by ‘usage pattern’ and ‘domain.’ We are currently using AI in the:
- usage patterns of:
- analytics for insight – such as summarising reports for insights and extracting data from statements into more usable formats
- workplace productivity – such as creating emails and content for human review.
- domains of:
- service delivery – we currently use AI to produce audio transcripts of our news articles to increase their accessibility
- corporate and enabling – such as creating internal communication for human review.
What we are not using AI for
We do not currently use AI in the:
- usage patterns of decision making and administrative action or image processing
- compliance and fraud detection, law enforcement, intelligence and security, policy and legal or scientific domains.
AI governance
To promote public trust and confidence in how we use AI, we assess each use of AI against relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks, including any security, privacy, transparency and ethical risks. We look at the impact that AI will have to the ACNC, charities or the public.
We are also committed to reviewing the effectiveness of AI.
We aim to update this statement when making a significant change to our approach to AI or when there is new information that should be included in the statement. We will update this statement at least once a year.
The ACNC Commissioner is the ACNC’s Accountable Official under the Policy for the responsible use of AI in government.
